News Dance/Club Industry Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange kicks off

bangkokWe’ve already told you how Smirnoff’s Nightlife Exchange will see London host a ‘Miami Pool party’ but it’s not just Blighty that’s in on the Exchange swapping. On November 27 the nightlives of 14 cities around the world will swap with each other, giving Smirnoff fans the opportunity to try another country’s clubbing. All this week Mixmag has been in Asia to sample the nightlife of three of the continent’s busiest cities.

For the last few days Mixmag has been in Bangkok. The Thai capital’s reputation may be tarnished with ping-pong shows and ladyboys but the seedy underbelly of Bangkok is just a tiny fraction of its otherwise exciting and credible nightlife. Areas like RCA hold all kinds of venues favoured by big-name DJs. The huge 808 is one such club that hosts superstar DJs on busy midweekers. Just opposite is Cosmic Cafe where Mixmag spent last night enjoying the open air venue’s 5th anniversary as a local Thai band played Motown covers.

It’s because of Bangkok’s year-round warm climate that open air venues here flourish. Another such bar is Bangkok’s Sky Bar found on the 64th floor of one of the cities most opulent hotel’s, The State Tower. Elsewhere the city Bed Club, owned by the same chain as Amsterdam’s Supperclub, sees ex-pats mix with the locals in a venue filled with white leather beds. The sign at the door reading ‘No Weapons, No Sex and No Drugs’ seemed to be being adhered to!

Bangkok is one of the craziest cities on the planet and the mix of cultures, smells, hustle and bustle and insightful culture makes it an unmissable jumping off point for any clubber’s who currently thinks Thailand is just about the Full Moon Parties on the country’s southern islands.

Bangkok will be swapping nightlives with Beirut later this week. For more on that see www.facebook.com/smirnoff. Sadly Mixmag won’t be there to see it. This morning we hopped on a plane and we now find ourselves in Mumbai, the Indian capital formerly known as Bombay. For more on what happens here keep an eye out for our next Asian report later this week.
