Mixmag Weekly DJ Charts – End Of Year 2010
A new week, a new set of Top 10 charts from 12 of the most exciting artists from all over the DJ universe – from fresh up-and-coming artists, through pioneers of more underground sounds, to some of the biggest household names.
This is Mixmag.net DJ Charts – End Of 2010, providing you with the ultimate soundtrack to see you through the holidays and the New Year. Get a load of these fresh tracks, spun by the likes of one of west coast techno’s rising stars, Lee Foss, dubstep don Scuba, the mysterious Mr. O (of sandwich lovin’ Detroit Grand Pubahs’ fame), the d’n'b rooted electro trio with the conspicuous name Hot Pink Delorean, and many more. Ho, ho, ho…
Scuba
The man behind the highly influential Hotflush Recordings, consistently pushing the envelope of forward-thinking, bass heavy dubstep, Scuba is also responsible for breaking the sound to the world’s techno capital Berlin, and taking over its temple – Berghain. With the launch of Sub:stance, Europe’s biggest dubstep night, Berlin is now dancing to a different beat, as well as dub-techie mutations are springing up everywhere.
Mr. O
The Mysterious Mr. O is one half behind Detroit Grand Pubahs, who through their clever fusion of funk, electro and techno had us all shaking our behinds to a song about our favourite lunch snack. Running their own Detelefunk label (Detroit Electronic Funk), but never straying far from their love of bass and dub, new side label project Deteledub is dedicated to more dubsteppy grooves. Their mantra is simple: ‘Move your ass and your mind will follow.’
Lee Foss
If 2009 was the year Lee Foss shot to fame, 2010 saw him firmly established as a staple on the techno scene with seminal releases on, and collaborations with, labels such as Culprit and Wolf+Lamb, not to mention instigating – together with underground-prince-turned-disco-lord Jamie Jones – the imprints Hot Natured and Hot Creations. With radioplay and support from everyone from Laurent Garnier to Sebo K, Ryan Elliot, Martin Landsky and Dan Ghenacia, 2011 looks like another stellar year for Foss.
Holgi Star
A no-fuss, straightforward techno stalwart, Holgi Star is often branded as the heart and soul behind the Berlin labels such as Kiddaz.fm and Rompecabeza. A testament of his global reach came as a result of his 2003 debut album ‘Star Wars’, which had Japanese clubbers downloading the album title track thousands of times as ringtone on their mobile phones.
Eddie Halliwell
Drawing support from the likes of Paul van Dyk and Tiesto, the former Radio 1 presenter and Mixmag’s DJ of the year 2003, Eddie Halliwell is also involved in the evolution of his craft working closely with the world’s leading DJ equipment manufacturer, Pioneer, and being a part of their development team. As if that wasn’t enough, the gone year also saw him release a hotly-anticipated Cream Ibiza compilation, as well as launching his very own iPhone App
Nathan C
The Jersey born London-based DJ and producer has had six very successful months with releases some the biggest house labels at the moment, ie Toolroom, Cr2, Stealth and 303 Lovers. Aside from more mainstream collaborations with Lily Allen, Sugababes and Lady Sovereign, his work has gained recognition from the DJ elite with names such as Tiesto, Erick Morillo, Mark Knight, Pete Tong, Sasha, Fedde Le Grand, and Chuckie spinning his tracks, to name a few.
Hot Pink Delorean
Originally a d’n'b act called Terravita, the guys decided to ‘mess around with some electro’ and did so to such success that they soon found themselves touring the world, under the name of Hot Pink Delorean.
With influences such as Pendulum, Sub Focus and bass-ridden house like that of Chuckie, as well as elements of hip hop like Rakim and Twista, HPD fitted the Kissy Sell Out format, and have just finished touring the UK with the very same. What it sounds like? ‘Music that makes you dance – Untz, Untz, Untz…’
Michael James
The young Zoo resident manages to captivate his audience with a varied soundscape consisting of dub minimal, house and techno elements, where the early hours provide the perfect setting for experimenting with deep and chilled sounds. With hailed gigs at Ibiza’ Zoo Project, Watergate and Sankeys, he next takes his sound to Fabric on NYD for Wet Yourself, which promises to be a perfect match.
Loadstar
Xample and Lomax started working together in 2007, heavily influenced by The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk – yet their sound of choice was drum and bass. The combination of Xample’s raw dancefloor sound and Lomax experimental edge proved instantly lethal, which Ram stablemates Sub Focus and Chase and Status can testify. Expect big sounds coming out of this duo in 2011.
Ryan Crosson
That Ryan Crosson hails from Detroit is something of a no-brainer, which is evident in forming his soundscape. Constantly reinventing himself, drawing inspiration from Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin, and Moodymann in the US, and Ricardo Villalobos in Europe, has seen Ryan Crosson take his sound from more minimal grounds and beyond. Together with Seth Troxler, Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves he is also the founder of the much raved about Visionquest imprint. Expect to share their vision in the new year.
Shaun Soomro
With his ear firmly to the underground, Shaun Soomro has developed as deep and hypnotic yet dark and funky sound, threading over minimal, through to techno, house and disco. 2007 saw him set up the Lick My Deck label, focusing on releasing intelligent and provocative electronic music. Last year saw the label firmly establish itself at now sadly defunct east London playground T Bar, where Shaun played along side artists like Baby Ford, Thomas Melchior and Bruno Pronsato amongst others.
GOW
With a string of household names supporting his work, notably “the three R’s”: Ricardo Villalobos, Raresh and Richie Hawtin, GOW’s productions on Germany’s Trapez and New York City’s Digiprana labels are seeing great success, crisscrossing between deep and tech house, with elements of minimal and techno. With the habit of always editing the majority of tracks he plays to add his own interpretation, you can always be sure to hear exclusive material from this Zoo resident.
See you in 2011 – because we ♥ music.
